Celebrating 60 Years of the Ghana Cedi: A Journey from Cowries to Currency Resilience

This year (2025), we mark six decades since Ghana transitioned from a colonial currency to a national symbol of independence - the Cedi.

1965: Under President Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana embraced the decimal system, replacing the Ghana pound with the Cedi and Pesewa—a deliberate nod to our pre-colonial roots. The name “Cedi” comes from sedie, the Akan word for cowrie shells, once widely used in trade across the region (Bank of Ghana).

1967: Political change prompted a redesign—the “New Cedi” emerged, removing Nkrumah’s image and streamlining its value by exchanging 1 old Cedi for 1.2 new Cedis (Bank of Ghana).

2007: Inflation had taken its toll. To simplify transactions, Ghana redenominated its currency - 10,000 old Cedis became 1 Ghana Cedi, introducing the modern unit we recognize today (Citinewsroom, DailyGuide Network).

From colonial remnants to our own unit of trade, the Cedi’s evolution mirrors Ghana’s economic and political journey. Today, while it reflects challenges like depreciation and inflation - it also symbolizes resilience and sovereignty.

As we honor sixty (60) years of our national currency, let’s reflect on what the Cedi truly represents: a story of independence, adaptation, and perseverance. Our responsibility now is to fortify its future-through sound policy, economic innovation, and a renewed commitment to financial stability.
